Chow Mo-wan: In the old days, if someone had a secret they didn’t want to share… you know what they did?
Ah Ping: Have no idea.
Chow Mo-wan: They went up a mountain, found a tree, carved a hole in it, and whispered the secret into the hole. Then they covered it with mud. And leave the secret there forever.

Chinese Film

Last night I finished my endeavor to watch 20 Chinese films this year, it started with a paper I took in semester one, ‘Chinese Film and New Era Civilisation’ and the seven films I was examined on…I guess I tried to be as loose as possible in my definition of Chinese so as to be all encompassing and make it easier for me to find legal versions to watch…so here’s the list so far:

  • Yellow Earth//Chen Kaige//1984
  • Red Sorghum//Zhang Yimou//1984
  • Blue Kite//Zhang Yimou//1993
  • Farewell My Concubine//Chen Kaige//1993
  • Eat Drink Man Woman//Ang Lee//1994
  • To Live//Zhang Yimou//1994
  • Temptress Moon//Chen Kaige//1996
  • Curse of the Golden Flower//Zhang Yimou//2006
  • Raise the Red Latern//Zhang Yimou//1991
  • 2046//Wong Kar Wai//2004
  • Days of Being Wild//Wong Kar Wai//1991
  • In the Mood for Love//Wong Kar Wai//2000
  • Yi Yi: A One and a Two//Edward Yang//2000
  • The Flight of the Red Balloon//Hou Hsiao-Hsien//2006
  • I wish I knew//Jia Zhangke//2010
  • Candy Rain//Chen Hung-I//2008
  • Somewhere I Have Never Traveled//Fu Tien-Yu//2009
  • The World//Jia Zhangke//2004
  • Platform//Jia Zhangke//2000
  • Up the Yangtze//Yung Chang//2007

Who or what will I watch next? Not sure specifically but I like the idea of how we might read all the works of one author and applying this to a director..and I’d like to buy Michael Berry’s book, ‘Jia Zhangke’s Hometown Trilogy: Xiao Wu, Platform, Unknown Pleasures’ sometime..
